January 20, 1790 at 65 year died a great doctor - John Howard. But this man was not just a medical activist, but also reformer of prison affairs, philanthropist and humanist. In October 1789 he arrived in Kherson. A large concentration of troops under adverse conditions of their placement caused an outbreak of infectious diseases. True to his principles, Howard tirelessly helped to the sick and suffering. However, caught an infection from his patients...
John Howard lived and died as a hero. In his honor, in Kherson in 1820 was set the monument in classic traditions in the form of a sundial. The monument was erected by architect V. Stasov.
To honor of the memory of the great philanthropist, January 20, 2012 in Kherson, at Ushakov Avenue near the sundial came the Coalition "Supporting the development of charity in the Kherson region", which laid flowers in memory of the great humanist. Recall that this coalition was created before the New Year. It is composed of eminent person of Kherson region: philanthropists, businessmen, politicians, cultural and public figures. Ustin Maltsev, head of the Foundation, one of the first, who realized that good things people must do together. That's why this year, near the sundial at Ushakov Avenue, had gathered a lot of people.

   - I'd like to say, that John Howard for me is a man with a capital letter, a person who has made in our society segment of service and giving. For none of us is not a secret that after his death, John Howard wanted put the monument - a sundial. In order that people can see the time. However, this monument is actually brings even more information for our society. English philanthropist said that the most important thing in life is time, because none of us knows, how many time you have in this life. By his words and deeds, he shows, that the need to rush to do good. - said Ustin Maltsev. It may also have wanted to convey the architect Stasov in their work. On the monument engraved: "lived for others", "Did others healthy".
Very clearly noted by the Polskaya Larissa, the head of the charity fund "Zahist", that previously had been an epidemic of typhus, but today we have an epidemic of callousness. We hope that the Coalition will work to improve the situation of moral ethics of our society in a positive way.

Every act of kindness and charity is a stepping stone towards Heaven.
